In mid-August, the Opportunity to Compete Act was passed by New Jersey legislators. The act becomes effective on March 1st, 2015. This act 'bans the box' on employment applications that require the disclosure of criminal history info from potential applicants during the initial application process. This ruling applies to both the initial application AND subsequently, to the first interview.

A gunman opened fire at the NJ Garden State Plaza Mall on November 5, 2013. Richard Shoop, 20, of Teaneck, N.J., fired his weapon at least six times. The gun, described as a modified rifle, was owned lawfully by his brother. Bergen County reported the first call came in shortly after 9 p.m., shortly before the mall was closing for the evening. Approximately 400 people were still inside the mall when police ordered a lock-down of the entire building. Shoop's body was found in a back area of the mall around 3:20 a.m. According to reports, Shoop had a history of drug abuse. Full article.
