Sexual harassment in the workplace typically takes one of two forms: quid pro quo (“this for that”) harassment or the creation of a hostile work environment.

In quid pro quo harassment, an individual who has some power over you (a principal or superintendent, for example) either offers you a job-related benefit or threatens some job-related sanction or punishment in exchange for sex. The benefit can be of almost any type, provided it is job-related. It may be an opportunity for a better teaching position, for increased pay, for special access to professional development or materials, or even a bigger classroom. The threat might involve requiring you to handle detention, giving you the most difficult students, denying you a raise or even suggesting that you may be terminated if you fail to comply.

The creation of a hostile environment occurs when supervisors, principals or others in roles of authority condone, encourage or foster a work environment where sex, sexual jargon, lewd pictures, emails, jokes and other references are common and where you cannot work without being regularly exposed to those references.
