Are you watching out for serious warehouse safety hazards?

On Behalf of | Jun 5, 2019 | Workers' Compensation

In many areas in New Jersey and across the country, it is common for people to earn their livings by working in warehouses. Some people may not think this the most glamorous type of job, but it is one that helps you and many others earn an income and provide for yourself and your family.

Of course, working in a warehouse can come with serious safety risks. While you undoubtedly always hope to make it home safely at the end of your shift, you could face more chances of suffering injuries on the job than you may be aware of. As a result, in efforts to increase your chances of staying safe while working, you may want to recognize common warehouse safety hazards.

What should you watch out for?

If you have worked for many years in your position without suffering injuries yourself, you may have still witnessed serious accidents while on the job. You may have felt lucky at the time that you were not involved, but any of the following hazards could affect you at any time:

  • Fires: Warehouse fires often do not get the attention they deserve as a serious workplace hazard, but if a fire does break out while you are on the job, you and many others could end up in fear for your lives.
  • Slipping or tripping: The warehouse in which you work may have many materials, cords, boxes and equipment spread across floors or walkways. If so, you face the risk of tripping over these objects or slipping due to a spill and suffering injuries.
  • Equipment: Many warehouses also contain heavy equipment needed to complete tasks. If the equipment is not used properly or if it malfunctions due to a lack of maintenance, a serious accident resulting in injuries could take place.
  • Falling objects: As mentioned, the warehouse may have a lot of materials inside, and if someone has stacked boxes, products or other objects too high or on precarious shelves, a falling object could strike you or another worker and cause injuries.

Unfortunately, this list contains only a few of the common hazards that plague warehouse workers.

What should you do after an accident?

If you do suffer injuries due to a work-related warehouse accident, you may want to gain information on your workers’ compensation options. Workers’ comp benefits could help you address medical expenses, lost wages, other financial difficulties and more if the insurer approves your application. Because the process for obtaining benefits is not always easy, you may want to consider obtaining help with your application from a knowledgeable attorney.
