CASINO INJURIES NOT THAT UNCOMMON

On Behalf of | Aug 17, 2016 | Personal Injury

A trip to Atlantic City-for many, it’s the dream of a lifetime, for others it’s a favorite escape, and for some it’s a nightmare. Though the issue doesn’t get a lot of media attention, casinos offer significant potential for serious injury. Here are just a couple examples.

Injuries Caused by Overzealous and often Under-Qualified “Security” Personnel

Casinos typically employ a large number of security personnel, but many of them may have little experience or training, and minimal skills in dealing with the public. As a result, when put in challenging situations, those guards may act first and ask questions later. Consider the story of John Binns and his family.

Mr. Binns, his wife and his 17-year-old daughter were staying at Harrah’s in Atlantic City when they had challenges with their electronic room key cards. When Mr. Binns asked for new cards, he was told he could not have any, as his name was not on the hotel’s guest list. As Binns discussed the matter with hotel employees, two security guards came up and threw him to the ground. They then followed his wife and daughter, who were leaving the scene, forced them to separate, and pushed both of them to the ground. During the scuffle that ensued, Binns’ daughter was knocked out and sustained a broken nose.

Deanna Medley, a guest at the Atlantic City Hilton in 2011, tripped while exiting out of an elevator. Evidence showed that, as the Ms. Medley attempted to leave the elevator, it dropped a couple inches and she stumbled. Testimony also showed that the casino operators had been warned of the problem before Medley’s accident.
