WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET A SPEEDING TICKET IN NEW JERSEY

It happens to even the most conscientious drivers-you get a speeding ticket. Often, it's because you're driving in an unfamiliar part of town and you're not certain what the speed limit is. At other times, it can simply be a product of distracted driving-you're trying to get the kids in the back seat to behave or you're thinking about everything you have to do when you get to your destination. It's easy to get caught up in the flow of traffic and be the one who gets pulled over, even though everyone else is speeding.How-to-Beat-a-Speeding-Ticket-300x200.jpg

It's not easy to beat a speeding ticket, but here are some things you can do to improve your chances that the officer will either give you a warning or opt to dismiss the ticket.

  • Be as courteous as you can with the officer who pulled you over-If you get testy with the officer, or accuse the officer of unfairly pulling you over (when everyone else was speeding), you'll most likely get the ticket and you may provide extra incentive for the officer to appear at the hearing on your ticket. If there are extenuating circumstances-you're driving an unfamiliar car, such as a rental, or you are unfamiliar with the area-calmly let the officer know this is not the way you typically drive.
  • Write the officer a letter-You'll have the officer's name on the ticket. If you are uncomfortable talking to the officer at the scene, or you need time to put together your thoughts, send the officer a letter setting forth why you were exceeding the speed limit. The officer may opt to drop the matter before you have to go to court.
  • Talk to the prosecutor-Prosecutors are often willing to negotiate a deal, so they don't have to go to court. You may be able to simply pay a fine and have no points added to your driving record.
