OCEAN COUNTY DOCTOR ALLEGEDLY SELLING ILLEGAL PILLS RAIDED

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2014 | Criminal Law

An Ocean County special operations squad raided a doctor’s office on January 24, searching for evidence of illegal drug prescriptions. The doctor in question, Dr. Liviu Holca, age 55, is a family practitioner who was arrested for writing unlawful prescriptions of drugs like Percocet and Xanax.

The family practitioner’s bail was set at $225,000. Evidently, he dispensed drugs on eight different occasions to undercover narcotics officers in the summer of 2013. The county is cracking down on situations like these because it appears that prescription pills can become a gateway to heroin usage and addiction.

When people become addicted, said Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato, “It’s just a matter of time before an addicted person’s habit pushes them from high-priced pills to cheap street heroin.”

In the past several months, law enforcement officials and recovering addicts have been seeking to stem the significant increase in the number of people overdosing on drugs in Ocean County. In 2012, 100 people suffered a fatal overdose. In 2013, the number doubled to 200. The problem is not limited to New Jersey; it is also of concern in and around the Philadelphia suburbs. People addicted to drugs become the unwitting victims.
