New Study Shows a Traumatic Brain Injury can Instantly Impact a Person’s Life

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1.7 million people sustain traumatic brain injuries every year in the United States.  Traumatic brain injuries often occur when a victim suffers a violent blow to the head or when a foreign object penetrates his or her skull. The CDC reports that from 2002 through 2006, there were 52,000 deaths each year, on average, attributed to traumatic brain injuries.  Those victims that survive the accident face a lifetime of traumatic brain injuries-related disabilities.  This includes roughly 5.3 million people in the U.S. alone.  Read more at

Traumatic brain injury means an acquired injury to the brain caused by a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury/neuro-trauma that disrupts the normal brain function, where continued impairment can be demonstrated. This term does not include dysfunction caused by congenital or degenerative disorders, birth trauma or injuries caused by other circumstances. Brain injury cases are complex. Many of the symptoms may not be readily apparent at the time of an accident. And to the causal observer many of the consequences of head injuries may not be noticeable.
