New York Jets running back Michael Goodson has been indicted on weapons charges stemming from a traffic stop in New Jersey. Goodson was discovered by police in Denville in May 2013. During a traffic stop, police recovered a loaded .45-caliber handgun and one hollow point bullet. Goodson faces unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of prohibited weapons and devices. In New Jersey, firearm owners are required to get a lifetime Firearm Purchaser Identification card for the purchase of rifles, shotguns or handguns. A separate permit is needed from the Chief of Police of their municipality to purchase a handgun. A permit is required for each handgun to be purchased and expires after 90 days. These permits are provided to applicants on a shall-issue basis. They require in-depth application questioning, multiple references and background checks via the State Bureau of Identification and New Jersey State Police. Those applicants who satisfy the statutory criteria must receive a permit; there is no discretion for authorities to deny a permit. Reasons for denial include being convicted of a crime or disorderly persons offense in the case of domestic violence.
