Gunman Opens Fire at NJ Garden State Plaza Mall

A gunman opened fire at the NJ Garden State Plaza Mall on November 5, 2013.  Richard Shoop, 20, of Teaneck, N.J., fired his weapon at least six times.  The gun, described as a modified rifle, was owned lawfully by his brother.  Bergen County reported the first call came in shortly after 9 p.m., shortly before the mall was closing for the evening.  Approximately 400 people were still inside the mall when police ordered a lock-down of the entire building.  Shoop’s body was found in a back area of the mall around 3:20 a.m.  According to reports, Shoop had a history of drug abuse.  Full article.

Under New Jersey law, all weapons holders must have a lifetime firearm purchaser card to purchase or own rifles, shotguns, handguns, and ammunition. Owners must also have a separate permit from a local police department for each handgun. Those permits must be renewed within 90 days of expiration. New Jersey limits the time period in which handguns may be purchased.  Handguns may only be purchased every 30 days. If you are in violation of any of the gun laws or permit laws in New Jersey, you could face serious fines and penalties.
