Governor Christie Says Out-of-State Guns Prevalent in New Jersey

Report Shows Many Guns Come into New Jersey

In a 75 page report released earlier this month, a “blue ribbon” panel appointed by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie found that, while violent crime has declined since Christie took office in 2010, guns coming into New Jersey from other states continue to play “a significant role” in violent crime in the state. The report comes on the heels of Christie’s public assertion that New Jersey gun laws may be too strict and may impinge on some 2nd Amendment rights.

The study, conducted in the aftermath of the mass shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, did not propose any changes to New Jersey’s gun laws, but did assert that violent crime can be effectively addressed through a combination of efforts, including increased public awareness, enhanced mental health care and more resources for law enforcement.

Critics of Governor Christie point out the very study he initiated appears to contradict some of the governor’s recent political moves. For instance, just weeks before the study was released, Christie vetoed a bill that would require that local law enforcement officials when someone wants to expunge a mental health record for the purposes of obtaining a firearm.

According to the report, four out of every five violent crimes in New Jersey take place in 21 of the state’s municipalities. Researchers also found that almost 90% of the guns seized by law enforcement officers over the last two years came into New Jersey from another state.
