NJPD OFFICER KILLED IN READ END COLLISION

On Behalf of | Aug 7, 2014 | Auto Accidents

An on-duty NJPD officer clocking for speeders was killed last month when a tractor-trailer vehicle rear-ended his parked car on a highway shoulder, without attempting to stop prior to the impact – according to the roadway evidence at the scene. At the time of his death, Officer Christopher Goodell, 32, was the second officer to perish within the line of duty that month, said prosecutors.

Goodell, a Marine Corps veteran, had been operating his radar on the shoulder of Route 17 in an unmarked vehicle when at about 1:30 a.m., truck driver Ryon Cumberbatch of Brooklyn, New York, struck Goodell’s vehicle and pushed it into the retaining wall, said Bergen County prosecutor John Molinelli. Mr. Cumberbatch, uninjured in the accident, called 911. It is currently unknown why Cumberbatch’s truck, which was half full transporting produce, veered onto the shoulder.

Goodell, a five-year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Cumberbatch was charged with vehicular homicide.
